Hauynite - this striking blue gemstone is more rare than diamonds and more difficult to work with.  Hauynite is named for the French crystallographer who first discovered it, Rene Just Hauy.  Hauynite occurs in only a handful of localities in the world, and few of those produce gem-quality crystals.  Hauynite is very sensitive to heat and shock, so faceters find it difficult to work with - it shatters easily when cutting.  As a result, when cut/faceted Hauyn stones are available, they rival diamonds in beauty and price.  These particular Hauyn crystals come from the famous Eifel locality - world reknowned for producing some of the most stunning specimens of this rare mineral.  These crystals weigh approximately .15 to .25 carats each and are in a rough state.  Shown in the photo is a 9 carat lot of approx. 50 stones.  Your purchase is for ONE LARGE *OR* TWO SMALL stones from lot shown in the photo.  (please indicate your preference in the order notes during checkout).  The black centimeter scale cube is shown for size comparison and is not included.

Hauynite is also known as haüyne, Auina, Berzeline, and Marialite.   Hauynite is a member of the sodalite group with a Mohs hardness of 6 and has been known to glow under longwave-UV light. (pink to purple to orange)
