When lightning strikes the Earth under the right conditions, the strike will fuse the soil into a glassy material called a fulgurite. Fulgurites are also called "petrified lightning" and it represents nature's glass-making process.
Fulgurites are composed of minerals found in the area where the lightning struck and they also contain an exotic form of silicate known as lechatelierite. Fulgurites may also contain gas bubbles, hollow areas, or pieces of rock fused to them.
These particular fulgurites come from the La Paz Arizona area and are
known as "Type-III, Calcite-type" fulgurites that are poor in
lechatelierite content..
