Several years ago, we purchased a wooden box full of tools and odd bits from the estate sale of a retired mortician in New Orleans. Originally, there was a large wooden box with several drawers and each drawer held various tools and props used to embalm the dead and prepare the deceased for funeral viewing. While sitting in storage, one of the drawers became separated from the box. The box of tools was sold years ago on eBay, but while going through our storage, I came across this orphaned drawer full of bits.
An expert on these things told me what these objects are :
The two rounded clear plastic cups with holes in them are used to keep the deceased eyes from appearing sunken-in during the viewing. These are placed under the eyelids to give the closed eyes a more natural appearance.
The two metal wires with brass anchors on them are used to stitch the mouth of the deceased closed.
The white plastic plug is used to fill in gunshot holes, stab wounds, or other trauma to the body - this plug is then covered over with putty and make-up.
Yes, these items are quite morbid, but they have never been used and make an interesting conversation piece.
All of the pieces come in the small wooden drawer shown. Refer to the photos.
