NWA 6287 is a rare L/LL5 chondrite that
was purchased out of Morocco by John Higgins and classified by Dr. Tony
Irving. There are only 16 known L/LL5 chondrites, so this is a very
rare meteorite that is highly desired by "type collectors". Note, this classification is provisional. The
classifier said that this particular meteorite is very rare and that it
doesn't neatly fit into the L or LL classes, so he designated it as
"L/LL5" until more studies can be done.
This meteorite has a lovely matrix that shows
chondrules, nickel-iron inclusions, and troilite inclusions. The
weathering and shock ratings are W1 and S2, and the TKW is a modest
4.4kg.
