Approx. 15 million years ago a massive meteorite impact slammed into what is now central Europe. The catastrophic impact carved out a massive crater complex that survives today. The Ries impact complex is associated with the creation of Moldavite and a wide variety of other impact-related materials. For centuries, masons in the area have used blocks of impact breccia for the construction of buildings and roads.
The specimen being offered here is a block of suevite breccia from the Bollstadt locality of the Ries crater complex. It has four cut sides and two natural sides. It displays well in several positions and weighs 100 grams.
