The Ries impact structure is a massive crater that is 25km in diameter. Approx. 15 million years ago, a massive meteorite slammed into the Earth near what is now Stuttgart Germany. This impact is associated with the creation of Moldavite, breccia, melt rock, and glassy impactites called Fladles. The Ries impactor is though to have been approx. one mile wide and the resulting catastrophic impact vaporized many square miles of rock. The impact was so violent, that large volumes of ejecta material was launched upwards and out of the atmosphere. This material then fell back to Earth as Moldavite.
Via a trade, I managed to acquire some nice Ries impact specimens and I only have a limited quantity of them. This piece being offered here is a slab of impact breccia rock. This material consists of a tan-colored matrix filled with small shocked clasts of native minerals.
Refer to the photos. The black centimeter cube is shown for scale and is not included. You are purchasing the specimen shown, which weighs 48 grams.
