14.5 million years ago, a giant meteorite slammed into the German countryside. This catastrophic impact was so violent, that the supersonic shockwaves tore through the underlying bedrock and altered it permanently. These small shatter cones show the characteristic "horse tail" striations that are "fossilized shockwaves" - a permanent record of the ancient impact and it's shockwave. Each shatter cone weighs about 8-10 grams.
