Weaubleau Osceola Crater, Resurge Breccia, Polished Slice 176g

Rock Type:  Polymict (Resurge) Breccia

Composition:  Mixture of rock fragments from different sedimentary rock layers.

Locality:  Weaubleau Impact Structure, St. Clair County, Missouri U.S.A.

Approx. Weight:  176 grams

Condition:  Cut-faces are flat with no saw marks, polished to 2000 grit, no clear-coating.  Back side (labeled side) is rough and weathered break surface.

Remarks:  The Weaubleau impact is believed to have occurred at sea during the latter half of the Mississippian Period of geologic time.  It is thought that this particular breccia comprises fragments of ejected bedrock and loose seafloor sediment (mostly crinoid ossicles but the remains of other marine invertebrates as well) that were mixed together during tsunami-like waves that surged in and out of the subsea crater after impact.  The crinoid ossicles (composed of calcite) are very obvious in this specimen.
