Amber from the Simojovel region of Mexico (Oligocene deposits from the area near San Cristobal las
Casa in the state of Chiapas.). Chiapas amber is becoming increasing rare because much of the amber-producing area was destroyed by hurricanes between 2005 and 2007. Chiapas amber was used by ancient Mayan craftsmen and priests who held it in high regard as a part of their rituals and adornments. Chiapas amber is very old and very beautiful. Production has been officially shutdown by the Mexican government because the exhausted mines became too dangerous after being struck by a series of hurricanes. The availability of Chiapas amber on the collector market has plummeted as the supply as been cut off.
